Cardboard quest is back… with battle of the bands!

It won’t be quite the same as last year but we can still create a little bit of cardboard magic at home!

Start collecting your cereal boxes, loo rolls, delivery packaging and maybe even dig out and recycle last year’s costumes… because this year we are doing Battle of the Bands!

Get brainstorming for those awesome costumes and props. We want to see video of your fantastic covers from your favourite bands, photos of the making and the finished project and if you can have a battle with someone at home… then do it!

We will be judging for:

- Best song cover (individual)

- Best song cover (group)

- Best cardboard costume (kids)

- Best cardboard costume (adults)

Winners will be announced June Sunday 21st.

Please use the hashtag: #cardboardquest.

We have produced cardboard-tastic workshop videos to help inspire people to create parts of their costumes and props. Check this page and our YouTube channel for the series.

Paul McLaren — Commissioned Cardboard Artist

I thought I have been fascinated with mask and masque play my whole life, but I now think it has been something else, now I think it is ‘truth’ that has held my fascination. Particularly, telling ‘it’ in the past has ultimately meant trouble. It was part of growing up with wasps. Nowadays the mask has represented the search, the quest for an answer. The mystery of history, told by the holders of the bigger stick, needing re-evaluation for something better than ‘this’.

My work exists because I’m generally not happy, coming from Manchester, I never have been! I’m still searching, and had it not been the determination to produce objects of grotesque beauty, and wear them, I wouldn’t have met those people I cherish most. I make what I make in order to find more cherish worthy folk on this journey for three score years and ten.

The wearing of the mask is a spiritual moment whether it be just jest, a stamina test or to look the best. It should mean something because anything less would be revealed by the mask. When the King of Blackpool Rock and Roll takes to the stage for online Hullaballoo, you dare laugh whilst I shed a tear for those we miss.
