Sue Bailey — Storyteller

I was born and educated in Southampton. I studied Microbiology and Virology at Warwick University; worked in Youth Hostels in the Peak District and Norfolk; taught in Kirkby in Merseyside for 7 years; had 3 sons whom we home educated; lived in Wisconsin USA for three years and settled on the Isle of Wight in 2000.

I have told stories and run workshops at a number of places and venues over the years including for final year PGCE students at  the University of Bedfordshire and at Australia’s Castlemaine State Festival.

On the Isle of Wight, I have told stories at many of the festivals and community events that take place over here. Highlights have included telling tales at the  Isle of Wight Festival, Hullabaloo, and Rhythmtree.

Recently, I have worked in collaboration with the cultural and education sector with many Island schools to help children and young people create stories inspired by their local heritage.  Phlegm’s Ventnor Giant mural for example, inspired over 200 different tales each recordeed and used as part of Arts Award qualifications.

I tell tales at birthday parties, weddings, family gatherings, literary events, assemblies…

As you may have gathered, I love telling stories – anywhere, anytime, and to anyone!

Ben Gates — Orchestra of Objects

Ben Gates makes and designs pentatonic giant percussion instruments and sound sculptures for festivals, events, school play grounds and public parks. He has a background in sculpture, having studied fine art at degree level, and has his roots in community music having trained with Youth Music and the Sage Gateshead ‘Co Musica’ outreach projects.

Whilst developing robust and tuned instruments for public parks and play areas, Ben uses a wealth of industrial and domestic waste products to make really funky and fun sound sculptures and large colourful music instruments that he uses for his music workshops and as well as installing them at festivals across the UK. Now operating as Orchestra Of Objects, Ben has been inspired by classic junk bands and artists like ‘Bow Gamelan’, Urban Strawberry Lunch and the original masters of sound sculptures and makers of strange instruments, the Baschet Brothers.

Horsebox Theatre Company

Horse Box Theatre Company are very excited to be taking part in Hullabaloo 2020!

We were set up in 2018 to bring theatre to non-traditional spaces and we usually perform out the back of our converted horse box trailer. We created a season of plays and activities last summer and performed at various festivals and events. Throughout ‘lockdown’ we have been creating lots of content and videos on our facebook page and have just launched a season of shows broadcast online over the summer. We will be bringing our hugely popular ‘Game Show Show Live’ to Hullabaloo this year for two exciting performances!

We try to use items that you can easily find in the house to play our games. Some potatoes, carrots, a pen, some paper, scissors and a cup of water might come in handy!!  Share your photos and videos of how you get on with the Horse Box Theatre Company’s GAME SHOW SHOW LIVE at Hullabaloo 2020!
